Designing Learning Certificate

The complete foundational program for designing outcome-based training.

Discover all of the tools necessary to develop powerful, bottom-line focused training. Using a human performance improvement approach to instructional design, you will learn best practices for conducting needs assessment, job/task analysis, and course design and development using templates exclusive to ATD. Leave with a structured step-by-step process that can be immediately applied to the development of your own training programs.

The Designing Learning Certificate will take place May 03-05, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe and apply the ADDIE model.
  • Conduct a training needs assessment that aligns performance needs with organizational results.
  • Select and use data collection techniques as part of the training needs assessment process.
  • Demonstrate how to structure instructional events that address psychological learning processes.
  • Apply the ROPES phases of instruction to construct effective learning events.
  • Write complete learning objectives based on observable actions or behaviors.
  • Select learning methods and media to support the attainment of learning objectives.
  • Apply guidelines to the use of visuals, text, and audio in instructional materials.
  • Create participant guides, facilitator guides, and supporting materials.
  • Prepare reports that document the training needs assessment, program design, and recommendations for training implementation, including pilot tests and rollout.
  • Develop an evaluation strategy for training initiatives.


This course is designed for practitioners new to the field of instructional systems design or those wanting to apply the principles of human performance improvement to their course designs. Participation in the ATD Training Certificate Program is not a prerequisite.

Facilitator Information

Beth Yoder

Beth Yoder- Beth Yoder has been facilitating cross-cultural learning and development for individuals and organizations for almost 20 years. She brings the mind of a researcher, the heart of a teacher, and the enthusiasm of a pioneer to her work. She is the managing partner for Global Teams UAE and has been based in Dubai for the last eight years. She trains across Europe and the Middle East, as well as occasionally in West Africa and the United States. Her clients are equally diverse, coming from all sectors, and ranging from family-owned regional companies to global organizations. She draws on this broad experience, and her master's in intercultural relations, when designing or facilitating training for multiple cultures, or helping others to the same. Her passion is to develop local talent to succeed in the global arena.

Nikki O'Keeffe

Nikki O'Keeffe- Nikki O'Keeffee is a dedicated training specialist who delivers a positive, memorable, and meaningful service that repeatedly meets or exceeds the expectations of the client. She has experience creating strategies and visions to ensure training requirements and deliveries are in line with quality, probability, and client need.
Nikki has worked in varied industries, including education, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals. In her most recent role as the global senior training and development specialist at PAREXEL International, her focus was on managing and developing courses for new and existing staff on technical systems, process changes, new products, and soft skills.
